The “Battle of the Giants: Brace for Impact” press conference hosted by the Professional Fighters League (PFL) yesterday was more than just a spectacle—it was a statement.
The event showcased the league’s dedication to expanding its global footprint, with the heavyweight clash between Francis Ngannou and Renan Ferreira serving as the centerpiece of this ambitious strategy.
The PFL is not merely content with being another player in the combat sports arena; it is positioning itself as a global leader, and this event is a clear indication of that.

The announcement that the “Battle of the Giants” would take place in The Mayadeen, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (a new venue) is significant. Africa will account for eleven of the world’s 20 fastest-growing economies in 2024, the African Development Bank Group said in its latest Macroeconomic Performance and Outlook (MEO). Overall, real gross domestic product (GDP) growth for the continent is expected to average 3.8% and 4.2% in 2024 and 2025, respectively. This is higher than projected global averages of 2.9% and 3.2%, the report said.
The continent is set to remain the second-fastest-growing region after Asia.
This decision isn't just about putting on a show; it's about planting a flag in regions that are ripe for expansion and development in the world of MMA.
The global MMA market growth is driven by increasing viewership, higher engagement on social media platforms, and the expanding reach of live events through streaming services. MMA is no longer confined to traditional markets like the United States and Brazil; it is gaining a foothold in Asia, Europe, and Africa, regions that were once considered peripheral to the sport.
Africa’s Emerging MMA Market
Africa’s potential as a burgeoning MMA market is immense. With a population exceeding 1.3 billion and a rapidly growing youth demographic, the continent represents a significant opportunity for the sport’s expansion. MMA has begun to capture the imagination of African audiences, thanks in part to the success of African-born fighters like Francis Ngannou, Kamaru Usman, and Israel Adesanya, who have achieved global recognition.
The PFL’s decision to launch PFL Africa in 2025 is a strategic move to capitalize on this growth. By establishing a regional league, the PFL aims to nurture local talent, create opportunities for African fighters, and build a sustainable MMA ecosystem on the continent.
